Roosevelt Roads Golf Association Takes Home the Emilio Casellas Cup
Rio Grande, PR (October 23, 2012) – Over 65 players from five local golf clubs came together last Sunday at Trump International to compete in the inaugural edition of the PRGA Associate Member Clubs Championship. And, when all was said and done, the squad from the Roosevelt Roads Golf Association took home the victory and the Emilio Casellas Cup with a total of 1,049 strokes.
Roosevelt Roads dominated the competition, particularly thanks to the performance of some of its higher-handicapped players. While Iván Díaz, from Cangrejos Golf Club, led the 1st Flight (0-4.0 HI) with a round of 77, and Mario ‘Coco’ Carbia, from the Liga Senior de Puerto Rico, was the best in the 2nd Flight (4.1-8.0 HI) with a 74, Joaquín Negrón (80) and Jimmy Figueroa (83) far outpaced the competition in the 4th and 5th Flights to put some distance between them and the Cangrejos, who finished second with 1,088 strokes.
The Liga Senior finished third, just three strokes behind at 1,091. Tropical Golf Club and Coquí Golf Club also participated.
The Championship featured several notable players, like Carbia and Raúl Rivera, who recently represented Puerto Rico at the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships in St. Kitts. Incidentally, Carbia’s round of 74 was the lowest of any player on the day.
The Puerto Rico Golf Association congratulates the players from Roosevelt Roads GA on their fantastic performance, and thanks all of the participating clubs, Puerto Rico Senior League, Tropical Golf Club, Cangrejos Golf Club, Coqui Golf Club and each and every one of the golfers who attended for making the event a resounding success. See you all next year!
