Puerto Rico Junior Open
Coco Beach Resort, Rio Grande - Frankie Capan of North Oaks, Minnesota, shot a final-round 2-under-par 70 for a tournament total of 12-under-par 204 and the victory at the 2016 #AJGAPuertoRico Junior Open. Capan, who broke the tournament scoring record by two strokes also earned a sponsor’s exemption into the 2016 Puerto Rico Open played on the same course in March.
The record was previously held by the 2013 champion Jorge Garcia, a runner-up at the #LAAC2016 event being hosted simultaneously at Casa de Campo, Dom. Republic; and 2015 champion Andrew Kozan at 206, who finished in 5th place this year.
Capan led the tournament wire-to-wire and ended with 18 birdies and six bogeys. Three other players shot 66 in the final round to move themselves into the top 5: Tyler Strafaci, Greyson Porter and Eugene Hong.
It was also noted that during the final round, Mark Reppe of Dallas, carded the only eagle on the par 4 No. 17 hole which was playing at 405 yards.
Hosted by the Puerto Rico Golf Association, along with the great support and help of Carvin School Volunteers led by Elaine Rivera, the 2016 Puerto Rico Junior Open will go into the book of records, as another great championship and the best season-opening event for the year.
Best Result for a local junior golfer was carded by Melvin Alejandro Morales Valle, who finished in the Top 20 of the tournament after carding rounds of 69--73--76 strokes for an accumulated total of 218 and a tie with three other players on the field. From Humacao, PR and playing at the PRGA Junior Program for almost the past 10 years, Morales is just the third best player from Puerto Rico to register a remarkable performance at the PR Junior Open. José O. Rodríguez finished among the Top10 in the inaugural event in 2011 when the event also included a Girl's Division where Patricia García came in second place while Edward Figueroa, who now competes at the professional level (Web.com / PGATOUR Latinomerica) won the tournament in 2012.
